How to Master Procreate, When You Are Not a Professional Artist... YET!

An Artist who was so used to working in traditional media, and then using a graphics tablet and a computer discovers the power of iPAD and the Procreate App…

My working process was changed forever!

Hi everyone!
My name is Anna, (or @annasok_art) and I’m a Digital Artist and a Blogger behind yourartpath.com.

I started off like many of you with traditional art, and then simply FELL IN LOVE with the digital art world!

I spent a few years working with a tablet and Photoshop, trying to figure things out and get better.

But it never really felt intuitive.

My work was becoming better with time – but that feeling of discomfort just seemed too stuck.

And it wasn’t until I saw one of my favourite artists use an Ipad that I decided to make a switch.

The pricing wasn’t within my budget, but I saved up, made the leap and never felt regret!

The next step was to figure out what program to use??

At first, I thought it would be easier if I could use Photoshop on my IPad since I’m so familiar with it. And so I purchased a paid app that would allow me to use IPad Pro and Photoshop together.

And it SUCKED!

Then, I tried close to everything: from free to paid software, and nothing seemed to stick until…

I discovered Procreate! ♥

It felt a little overwhelming at first, but it was so user-friendly and so responsive that I immediately fell in love with the process of using it!

Little did I know that it would then take me around a year to FINALLY learn everything there is to the program and use it to its full potential!

There were so many mistakes made and so many confusing moments…

And yet, I’ve NEVER felt more comfortable making digital paintings!

I was finally satisfied 🙂

What I enjoy the most about working in Procreate:

  • Being able to work from any place at any time
  • The responsiveness and user-friendliness of the app
  • Working on my lap
  • Being able to create my own custom brushes with ease
  • Looking directly at my working space (I used to work with graphics tablet without a display)

Still, it took me almost a year!!

And that’s a long time…

But the problem is – I didn’t know what I didn’t know so I couldn’t learn it.

And there was no one to hold my hand and show me around and explain every detail.

If I knew everything I know now I would’ve avoided many irreversible mistakes, I would finish my painting way faster, and I would be able to use every feature within the program to improve my working process and the final outcome.
