What is a drawing prompt?

A drawing prompt is simply a helpful idea or a guideline meant to inspire creators and give them the next art project goal to tackle.

Do we really need another character generator?

As an artist myself, I know that sometimes art creation can be as easy as breathing! While as other times, starting at a blank piece of paper and not being able to start sketching right away sucks.

Creativity is a fickle thing, but if you have the persistence to continue drawing and creating art even if you don’t feel like it – success will follow. Art prompts sometimes make it easier.

I created this character art prompt generator because I didn’t find enough variety in the tools that are out there. Sure, there are some great apps and websites, but some are paid, and most don’t include all of the categories that I wanted for myself.

Art is personal.

Some of you might find that I didn’t include enough categories either, or maybe you have no interest in some of the prompts, and that’s OK.

Hopefully, some of these art prompt categories will be just what you need, and you will be filled with inspiration to keep going and create another incredible art piece.

Even if this helps one artist, I will be incredibly happy. Thank you for using my art prompts generator!

  • or if you like most of them, just refresh the ones you don’t like.

  • tip: for the ultimate challenge, DON’T regenerate any and try to make it work. Oh, what a unique oc character that will be!

How to use this Character Generator for different prompts?

You can choose to only create ideas with some of the features. This way, you won’t need multiple generators for similar tasks. Let’s break down each category of these generators:

  • Character Type Generator – comes up with random types of characters such as doctor, dark witch or mad scientist. It’s perfect for getting started with the overall oc drawing idea.

  • Talents and Skills Generator – provides ideas like acting, boxing or origami. It explains further the character’s inner joys and how they like to spend their time, or skills they were born with or developed over the span of the life.

  • Personality Traits Generator – reflect the person’s or creature’s pattern of thoughts, feelings and behaviours. It comes up with ideas like patient, driven, or sneaky.

  • Physical Traits Generator – provides with a defining trait of a person’s body. It provides characteristics like extremely tall, large eyes, or bushy eyebrows.

  • Hair and Eye Color Generator – helps in developing the character design further by adding specific colors into the mix. The answers provide a color name as well as the HEX code, so you can easily add it in digital medium as well. For example, LemonChiffon #FFFACD or Pink #FFC0CB.

  • Creature Type Generator – includes some mythical creature ideas that you can use for your oc, or just take certain parts of those creatures and make a mash of your own original creature. Some of the ideas that show up are ghoul, mermaid or tarasque.

  • Weapons Generator – the only inanimate object generator in this group that provides you with an idea for a weapon you character prefers to use. Ideas that show up are boomerang, two-handed sword, kunai and more.

  • Superpower Generator – this is a magical power or crazy skills that I had a lot of fun coming up with. Some ideas are more common, like flying, while others are a bit out there, like using hair to attack enemies. Hope you have fun with it too!

  • Tip: if you don’t know a certain creature, weapon or word, select and copy it’s name, and paste it in google search with the word “creature” or “weapon” or whatever it is at the end to learn more.

Art Prompts for Fantasy VS Real Characters

Sometimes you want to draw a real life human, and sometimes drawing magical fantasy heroes brings way more joy. Plan accordingly.

  • For Real World Character Concept, you can use all of the features, but leave out the creature type and superpower. And if the eye or hair color is a tad too crazy – regenerate it. (that’s also true for some of the character types).

  • For Fantasy Character Concept, you can use all art prompts at the same time. Nothing is too crazy!

  • For Creature Character Concept – it depends, some of the creatures don’t have hair, eyebrows or can’t be a character type. So, this one you will have to decide for yourself.

Why Use a Character Generator?

You should use a character generator art prompts if you are out of ideas, feeling an art block or want to draw something you would’ve never come up with yourself.
