DTIYS or Draw This In Your Style – is a challenge for artists that is oh-so-popular on social media.
The idea is that one artist shares their drawing with a #drawthisinyourstyle, #dtiys, or something along those lines… And other artists participate by taking that initial drawing and re-imagining it – taking it for a spin if you will.
Think of it as fan art of a sort 🙂
I think it’s definitely a fun way to try something new in your art, experiment, and move a few inches outside your comfort zone.
How to Participate in DTIYS Challenge?
Easy-peasy!
- 1. Search up the hashtag #drawthisinyourstyle on your favorite social media platform and get inspired!
I love browsing through Instagram and checking out artists who participate.
- 2. Find the work you love and taking it for a spin in your personal style and favorite art medium.
- 3. Share it on the platform and don’t forget to give credit to the original creator of the work 👌
Here’s my spin on it – swipe to see the original artist:

Draw This In Your Style Challenge: 2 Big Tips
So I want to share a few general tips with you, that I think might help you to create the best drawing interpretation and to have the most fun doing it.
1. It’s a “draw this in your style challenge“, not a “copy my drawing challenge”.
There is the big distinction right there that many beginner artists often misunderstand. The idea here is to show off you skill, creativity, imagination and style.
So draw as if you were creating a fan art, or “stylizing” a work.
It’s always more fun to pick the artwork of someone whose style is very different from yours – so both of your works can truly shine in their uniqueness!
2. No Limit Workflow
Don’t create rules where there aren’t any – and break the existing ones! 😈
Feel free to change the pose, the colors, the composition, even the working medium.
If you absolutely LOVE everything about the original drawing – keep it! If you think something can make it better – add it.
My DTIYS Process
I’m using Procreate app and my iPad Pro 13 inch to participate in this challenge.
I love using Procreate, and even created my own Mastering Procreate App course 🙂
Here are the basic steps I took:
Feel free to save this image to your Art boards on Pinterest 🙂
The drawing took me about 3 hours to make, then I sped it up 700% and created a voice-over explaining my process, some tips and ideas along the way.

Video Transcription
hi guys and welcome to my new video and
00:03
today I want to share with you the
00:04
process that I take for creating artwork
00:07
in perk right up so I decided to take
00:10
part of the draw this in your style
00:12
challenge and I found this beautiful
00:15
amazing character by the artist on the
00:18
left that’s their Instagram page and
00:22
yeah I found this character I fell in
00:25
love with her the one on the lap that’s
00:26
the one I decided to take on and today I
00:29
just want to share with you a video on
00:31
how I got there and to her in my style
00:34
in my process and just over all the fun
00:38
I had and the tips I wanted to share
00:41
with you okay
00:42
so I’m going to keep the artwork on the
00:45
left you should definitely check out
00:46
this artist if you think you would love
00:48
to see more of their work on your feet
00:51
and just follow them on Instagram so
00:54
okay so I started with a sketch
00:58
obviously and it was just a very loose
01:00
sketch and I did it on the symmetrical
01:04
grid system right so in per created you
01:08
can create symmetrical drawings and
01:10
that’s what I started with because
01:12
obviously a face is quite symmetrical
01:14
especially if it’s looking straight at
01:16
you but on the then I like lowered the
01:19
opacity of the layer and on the new
01:21
layer as you can see I made some
01:24
adjustments so as much as symmetrical
01:27
faces are great and fun the truth is
01:31
that to really bring interest to your
01:34
character or to your drawing you can it
01:38
can just be completely symmetrical there
01:41
has to be some parts there are not
01:43
exactly the same and that’s what’s going
01:45
to give it interest and believability
01:47
and realism or whatever right so because
01:51
nothing is exactly the same that’s very
01:54
digitalized so I just kind of went ahead
01:58
and decided to do this sketch I guess I
02:02
wasn’t trying to make it perfect as you
02:04
can see the lines are still very loose
02:06
and exploratory I just wanted to kind of
02:10
figure out for myself what are the
02:13
major shapes how are they working
02:15
together what is the big picture look
02:19
like and so yeah I just I wasn’t trying
02:22
to do a linear drawing that’s super
02:25
perfect I’m just a sketch and I did the
02:29
eyes I drew her eyes because it’s going
02:32
to help me position every other aspect
02:36
of her face if I know where the eyes are
02:38
so I just kind of drew them first and
02:41
then well then they will disappear and I
02:45
was kind of struggling a little bit with
02:46
a horn because on the left in the sketch
02:49
the horns look really cool my horns look
02:53
way less cool it’s probably the second
02:55
time in my life that I’m drawing horns
02:57
but it’s cool to take on challenges you
03:00
know if you haven’t drawn something you
03:03
might not even realize that you haven’t
03:05
so drawing new things is always fun it
03:08
helps you improve so definitely try to
03:12
take on a challenge where you’re asked
03:14
to draw random weird things that might
03:17
not sound interesting to you but then
03:19
they will help you learn how to draw
03:22
better so for example have you ever
03:24
drawn a banana or keyboard or I don’t
03:29
know a screen uh-huh or a specific kind
03:33
of flower the chances are you haven’t
03:36
drawn everything there is out there but
03:38
every little thing that you add to your
03:40
drawing capabilities will help your
03:43
overall drawing skill that’s what I
03:44
believe so I always try to draw
03:46
something new and I realized I don’t
03:49
draw much horns and I should because
03:51
they look pretty awesome okay so I just
03:56
kind of keep playing with the sketch
03:59
figuring things out and as you can see I
04:02
create new layers constantly and I do
04:05
something and if I like it I just merged
04:08
the layer down and if I don’t like it
04:11
see I just immerse all the layers but if
04:12
I don’t like it I just delete it and I
04:14
don’t have to worry about erasing it
04:17
perfectly without messing up the lines
04:19
that I actually like
04:22
so in that sense I am using the digital
04:28
tools that are available to me and I
04:31
know some people these while they try
04:35
not to use these tools because they feel
04:38
like they’re cheating especially at the
04:40
beginning of their journey they might
04:41
feel like they’re cheating somehow
04:43
that’s why they’re using these two not
04:46
using the tools given to them but I kind
04:48
of think it’s silly it’s definitely a
04:51
fantastical challenge to just draw on
04:54
one layer or just never use undo button
04:58
or never use some filters it’s a
05:01
challenge for sure makes your work more
05:05
thought through it makes you think more
05:08
it makes you be more intentional and
05:10
more confident with your lines so it’s
05:12
definitely awesome to do but at the same
05:15
time if you need that help or if you
05:17
want to speed up your process don’t feel
05:19
like you’re cheating you’re just using
05:22
the tools that are available to you it’s
05:24
like when you’re drawing with a pencil
05:26
right if you put the pencil on a certain
05:29
angle you can shade with it it’s like
05:31
saying hey don’t shade with your pencil
05:34
because it’s cheating right it doesn’t
05:38
make sense and so yeah just use all the
05:43
tools are available too I think they’re
05:44
all great especially like flipping the
05:46
canvas or liquefied tools or the undo my
05:50
favorite
05:51
I actually don’t do a lot of traditional
05:53
art anymore so when I pick up a
05:57
sketchbook once in a blue moon and I
06:00
start sketching I find myself trying to
06:05
undo all the time because Photoshop and
06:08
procreate allowed me to be more
06:11
experimental and so I just kind of put
06:15
on strokes without worrying and you can
06:18
see it perfectly right now because this
06:21
is my failed in quotes attempt to color
06:24
which I’ll just delete later but I’m not
06:27
worried about ruining what I’ve put in
06:29
any more because I know I can undo and I
06:33
know I can delete so
06:35
it’s literally not a big deal that is
06:38
why guys literally there’s no worries so
06:42
I use the tools that are available to
06:45
you especially at the beginning of your
06:48
journey come on like it’s not cheating
06:50
who cares how you created the work it’s
06:53
all the same you need to know so much
06:57
when you’re nervous there’s the lighting
06:59
there’s the value there’s the color
07:02
theory there’s the anatomy and
07:04
composition and yada yada yada there are
07:08
so many things just like make it easy
07:10
for you create a process that works for
07:13
you I still try to find mine and it
07:16
never will stop but you know anyway just
07:20
don’t feel bad about using digital tools
07:23
that’s kind of like I guess what I was
07:25
trying to save this whole time and also
07:27
I make mistakes all the time like look
07:30
at this this is my second attempt is
07:32
calling this drawing and it is not
07:35
working like I just I don’t know it’s
07:38
not working and I was trying to just
07:41
relax while I was painting it and have
07:43
fun so it’s not working okay bye Mike
07:48
that’s it
07:48
bye you’re not working for me I will not
07:52
continue to try to figure you out I just
07:58
delete it and I keep going and I try
08:00
something new and try something new I am
08:02
experimental in my process and maybe it
08:05
seems kind of a crazy and messy process
08:08
but I’m okay with it and if your person
08:11
is very thought through and I guess
08:15
perfect in its own way then I applaud
08:19
you because you found it and it works
08:21
for you and that’s fantastic
08:23
and I guess for everybody something
08:26
different works we’re all a different
08:29
everybody has this their own little
08:31
thing that works for them and I know for
08:34
sure that there are some artists that I
08:36
admire so much and their work is so
08:39
clean and even if I tried to create it
08:42
it wouldn’t feel right to me even if I
08:45
could do it right because that’s not
08:48
Who I am as a person I like messy lines
08:51
I like molding things together I like
08:55
putting random colors and then seeing if
08:58
it works I guess we’re all different and
09:01
that’s so beautiful because if every
09:04
single piece of art was the same art
09:07
world would be boring in fact I don’t
09:10
think it would be a big thing I think it
09:12
would be yeah just boring so I’m glad
09:15
we’re all different and we should
09:16
appreciate and accept that okay so back
09:20
to the drawing I am finally getting into
09:26
the zone where I’m like okay these
09:28
colors are all right let’s try to figure
09:30
them out so I’m trying to blend in some
09:33
colors her lips are a little bit blurry
09:36
at the top I just love that look and so
09:41
we’re doing that and just kind of trying
09:43
to see where are my lights where is my
09:45
light falling down
09:47
where are my shadows and how does it all
09:51
work together essentially because the
09:55
first two times the coloring did not
09:56
work at all and I was trying to add some
09:59
color underneath my line art this time I
10:02
decided to just create a new layer on
10:06
top of everything I’ve created and just
10:09
go right in and try to figure out my
10:12
forms and whenever I paint forms I try
10:16
to like this is a weird one I guess but
10:19
something I learned in my university I
10:21
went to art university so something one
10:24
of the teachers said that really stuck
10:25
with me is like whenever you’re drawing
10:27
or shading and you want to create a 3d
10:31
form imagine as if you are touching that
10:35
form right now what does it feel like is
10:38
it round is it going down like what does
10:42
it feel like so whenever I’m painting
10:45
and shading and blending I’m trying to
10:48
cause him to think like what would it
10:49
feel like if I touched her jaw right now
10:52
is it soft is it pointy like what is her
10:56
chin I was struggling with that chin the
10:59
whole time from beginning to the end
11:02
it just did not feel right it didn’t
11:04
feel like it has that proper shape but I
11:06
only understood that because I was
11:09
trying to understand what would it feel
11:11
like for me to touch her face at the
11:14
moment and yeah I think it really helps
11:18
me all the time even when I’m just
11:20
starting to sketch like figures or
11:23
whatever it’s like what do their bodies
11:26
and movements feel like what would it
11:27
feel like for me to stand like that you
11:30
know so it’s just kind of like a little
11:31
tip right there try to feel your
11:34
subjects and objects and whatever that
11:38
could help you
11:40
blunt better so in this video I kind of
11:45
I could have just like you know speed it
11:47
up to like ten minutes and just forget
11:50
about it and put slop on some music and
11:53
let you guys watch it if you’re curious
11:55
but I wanted to see if you would like
11:59
this if you would like me to speed up
12:02
the drawing but also talk about like
12:05
random things when I was sitting down
12:08
here to talk about this drawing I was
12:09
like I’m just gonna explain the process
12:11
but as you can see I jump back and forth
12:13
between different subjects and different
12:16
things that I’ve learned and there’s not
12:18
really a goal to this talk except that I
12:21
just say whatever comes to mind and then
12:25
I hope that some of it will be useful to
12:27
you so I would really love for you to
12:30
comment below if you would rather have
12:33
me do these like long 20 minute videos
12:36
and talk over with like the tips or the
12:41
things that were going through my mind
12:42
while I was creating this drawing or if
12:45
you would rather me speed it up to like
12:46
10 minutes and slap on some music and
12:49
just shut up so you don’t have to listen
12:51
to me by the way you can always turn
12:53
this the hunt off and just turn on some
12:55
music if that’s just you’re both better
12:57
I’m totally cool with that but yeah I
13:00
would just like to know so that if most
13:03
of you don’t want to share me talk about
13:06
different things
13:07
I just won’t record it you know it’s
13:09
less work for me um so yeah just let me
13:12
know I’d love to hear from you
13:15
and also if you do think that I should
13:17
talk over my drawings then what should I
13:20
talk about like what what is interesting
13:23
to you
13:24
there are obviously so many things I
13:26
could talk about or just like today I
13:28
freestyle it yeah I’d love to know so
13:32
let me know let’s maybe talk a little
13:37
bit about my process with the coloring
13:40
so I create new layers all the time slap
13:44
them in see if it works
13:46
if it doesn’t I changed the opacity of
13:48
the layer I changed the hue saturation
13:50
brightness with the adjustments and I
13:54
just try to make it feel right and then
13:57
if it feels right I merge it down and
13:59
then create a new layer and paint on top
14:02
of that so I constantly protect myself
14:04
from making big mistakes by working on
14:08
new layers but also when I’m happy with
14:10
something I just merge down and move on
14:12
I don’t think too much about it and also
14:15
I am working on a pretty big size I’m so
14:19
if your regular portrait size is 8.5 by
14:22
11 inches I’m working on double that so
14:25
17 by 22 inches and I also have 300 dpi
14:30
resolution if you don’t know what that
14:32
means no worries in there are
14:35
essentially two numbers you need to know
14:36
for resolution 72 dpi and 300 dpi 72 dpi
14:41
is for work that’s going to be displayed
14:43
online and you never ever ever want to
14:46
print it and 300 dpi is for work that
14:49
can be later on printed because it has a
14:51
lot more dots per inch so a lot more
14:54
pixels and you can print that work so
14:57
honest I don’t print my work that often
14:59
there’s always the possibility of like
15:02
hey what if some day I want to print it
15:04
so I always try to work on as big size
15:07
and this best resolution as possible
15:09
because you never know so I just worked
15:11
it 300 dpi and I believe I can only have
15:13
like 12 layers in procreate with such a
15:17
big size and such a good resolution and
15:19
because of that I have to constantly
15:22
combine my layers and it’s just kind of
15:24
like that’s why this process
15:27
works for me and that’s how this process
15:29
happened and Photoshop I kind of tend to
15:33
have like a hundred layers sometimes and
15:36
it just gets a little bit messy
15:38
okay so right now I figured out that her
15:41
hair is kind of bothering me that it’s
15:43
so white so I decided to do something
15:46
with it underneath you know how some
15:47
people paint their hair underneath a
15:49
different color than it is on the top so
15:51
that’s kind of what I’m going for and I
15:53
first I thought maybe some very bright
15:55
accent color would be a really cool but
15:58
then I realized that hey this dark super
16:01
dark brown looks really cool because her
16:05
horns her blindfold and her dress or
16:08
shirt look awesome that color so
16:12
altogether it just kind of works it
16:14
creates these very interesting shapes
16:16
inside of the story if you just squint
16:18
your eyes and just look at the shapes
16:20
that it created
16:21
it looks really really cool so obviously
16:25
squinting your eyes is something as well
16:27
that is a good trick to see if you’re
16:30
drawing works just squint your eyes and
16:33
see like what’s up you know and in this
16:35
case I feel like it’s working pretty
16:37
well although spoiler alert
16:39
at the end I am changing the background
16:41
color I know it’s not ideal your
16:44
background color should not change at
16:46
the end because it changes a lot of the
16:49
things that are happening within your
16:51
drawing essentially your background
16:53
color as one of my professors at
16:55
university said it’s your air color so
16:58
what is an airhead color the air you
17:01
breathe what would that color be and in
17:05
this case I picked this light to
17:07
saturate and blue color and air color is
17:11
very important because it reflects onto
17:14
everything within your drawing so I
17:19
should have just kept it and been happy
17:22
with that but I finished this drawing
17:24
three hours later and the next day
17:27
I realized that I don’t like that it
17:30
doesn’t have enough contrast so I spent
17:33
20 more minutes adjusting the colors
17:35
with different adjustment layers and I
17:38
added the exclamation point
17:40
and I changed the background color and
17:42
then I had to go back inside that
17:44
drawing inside the figure and add that
17:46
color to the figure so it all looks
17:49
cohesive there are so many things about
17:53
art that I wish I could just explain in
17:56
five words that you would understand
17:59
right away what I’m talking about but
18:00
especially for beginners it’s kind of I
18:02
might be speaking gibberish because I
18:04
swear like five years ago when I just
18:07
started and uni I think I didn’t
18:11
understand most of the things that they
18:12
were teaching me I only started
18:15
understanding it better and better
18:16
because they were teaching me the same
18:18
thing year after year after year and
18:20
that’s when I was like oh okay alright
18:23
so flipping kind of a super duper
18:24
important I keep talking about it all
18:27
the time flip your commas kids seriously
18:31
flip them way more than I flip them
18:34
because this the longer you wait the
18:36
worse it gets the worse your situation
18:39
is and so just flip them all the time
18:42
you know I keep telling myself Anna
18:44
flip your canvases but I forget anyway
18:47
just keep flipping them it’s a really
18:49
cool things you happen started a long
18:52
time ago with our traditional artist
18:55
putting a mirror behind them to see
18:57
their drawing flipped essentially in a
19:00
mirror so they can fix the mistakes but
19:02
we don’t have to put a mirror we just
19:04
have to press flip canvas and we’re good
19:06
to go so yeah flip your canvases and
19:10
guys if you want I forgot to mention I
19:15
have free hair brushes that I’m giving
19:18
out to people who go to my website my
19:23
blog is called your art path comm um and
19:28
yeah I’ll just leave a link down below
19:30
so it’s not a big deal
19:31
and in that link you will be able to
19:35
sign up to my email list to get free
19:38
brushes I know I’m very sneaky like that
19:40
I just want to be able to contact you in
19:42
the future while I release new videos
19:45
and new articles so essentially I create
19:49
more articles currently so on my blog
19:54
but I would like to create more videos
19:55
I’m just not sure what sort of videos
19:58
I’d love to be creating for you guys so
20:01
if you have any ideas again please new
20:02
comments and I’ll look at your ideas and
20:05
see what I can do maybe I can create the
20:07
idea that you suggest or maybe I can
20:10
just share my process like I am doing
20:12
today and whether it is with a voiceover
20:15
or just a regular time-lapse I guess
20:18
we’ll find out quite soon when you guys
20:22
respond to what do you think is the best
20:25
choice for me what else can I say
20:30
yeah so I’m just kind of constantly
20:32
pushing the saturation seeing how far I
20:35
can take it because these little accents
20:38
of saturation are just so beautiful so
20:41
attractive and I love adding them
20:44
wherever I can as well as using a little
20:47
bit of color dodge to brighten some
20:50
parts of the face and you can see the
20:55
ice behind the fault and I kept it
20:57
because you can kind of see them on the
20:59
original sketch in my sketch there are
21:01
no eyebrows you can see the eyebrows and
21:03
I kind of regret that at the moment I
21:05
think having eyebrows would be really
21:09
cool and I should have had eyebrows I
21:14
kind of didn’t think about it I think so
21:16
it’s fine
21:17
and I also merged everything together
21:20
and playing with different colors we
21:23
have your yellows magenta and whatever
21:26
and I just used the mid-tones shadows
21:30
and lights and I adjust them to see if I
21:33
like it but I always do it on a new
21:35
layer so I can switch them back and
21:37
forth and see if I actually like it or
21:39
not and I wasn’t sure if I should keep
21:41
the exclamation point but then at the
21:44
end of the day I ended up liking it as
21:46
you will see very soon actually because
21:49
we’re almost at the end I can’t believe
21:51
I was talking nonstop for more than 20
21:54
minutes that’s kind of crazy mmm I don’t
21:58
talk that much you know I just paint and
22:01
watch movies and play video games and
22:06
right for my blog I don’t talk that much
22:09
so this was very fun I hope you didn’t
22:13
get bored of my voice yet there is about
22:17
two minutes left and if you guys don’t
22:20
know anything about what I do it’s I
22:23
have this big big passion of mine it’s
22:26
called your art path calm
22:30
it’s my blog that I’ve been working on
22:32
since 2017 and we have over 6,000
22:36
amazing amazing people who are reading
22:40
that blog and what we have way more than
22:43
that but people who signed out to the
22:45
email list and are receiving
22:48
notifications from me whenever I post
22:50
something new I am so so grateful for
22:54
all of the 6,000 of you at the moment of
22:57
recording this video I say if you’re one
23:00
of them thank you so much and I
23:03
appreciate every single one of you if
23:05
you’re not on the email list yet and you
23:07
would love to receive notifications from
23:09
me
23:10
then you can always sign up at my blog
23:12
I’ll leave a link down below there are
23:14
of course some freebies that come with
23:15
it we actually have a very very popular
23:18
7 day drawing challenge that you can
23:21
sign up to I will also leave a link
23:23
below and it’s pretty much an email sent
23:27
to you every day for 7 days with a
23:29
drawing challenge with a drawing prompt
23:31
and yeah if you would love to go through
23:34
it people love it and I think it’s
23:36
pretty cool so at this point I am done
23:39
with the drawing I spent a little bit of
23:42
time editing it the next day here’s what
23:44
it looks like at the end I think it
23:46
turned out quite fun quite energetic and
23:51
saturated which I love so for sure check
23:54

23:56
them they are so great and also if you
23:59

Fantastic article! Participating in art challenges, especially on Instagram, is a great way to expand your reach on social media. Your art is beautiful too by the way.
Thank you, Julie! 🙂
Cool I love it
I’m glad you like it! 🙂
This is a really good article. I had been having a hard time with these challenges and this really opened my eyes.
